Georgetown gave a hard, tough performance today but what has become a recurring storyline, the Hoyas would come up short.
The Hoyas made just enough mistakes to leave Philadelphia with a 74-66 loss.
Georgetown was led by Donald Carey’s 24 points. Justin Moore scored 19 for Villanova.
Below is the blog from the game.
Game: Villanova 74 Georgetown 66
Hoyas just couldn’t make shots down the stretch. They missed them in every from threes that hit the side of the backboard to shots that wouldn’t stay down. All the while, Villanova made just enough plays.
Media Timeout (4:07): Villanova 66 Georgetown 60
Georgetown had multiple chances to cut it to one or tie it. They failed to do so, in part, because of turnovers. Villanova would push it back up to eight on a Caleb Daniels three pointer.
It looks like the 50/50 calls aren’t exactly going Georgetown’s way.
Villanova Timeout (8:21): Villanova 56 Georgetown 53
Georgetown would get six quick points closing to within five only to give up a three-point playwhen Ighoefe tried to cover in transition.
Hoyas respond with a Carey three. We have a game folks.
Georgetown Timeout (11:45): Villanova 53 Georgetown 42
Hoyas had the deficit down to three. But a string of Mohammed bad plays coupled with back-to-back three pointers by Slater and Daniels and the lead deficit grows to 11.
Under 16 (15:52): Villanova 40 Georgetown 34
Georgetown comes out and hit back to back threes (Harris had two; Carey one) cutting the deficit to 4. Villanova answered but the Hoyas pressure leads to a Holloway layup.
Halftime: Villanova 32 Georgetown 22
Villanova 9-0 run pushed the lead back to 10. Mutombo came in and scored four straight points for the Hoyas.
Georgetown Timeout (3:00) Villanova 24 Georgetown 18
Hoyas went zone out of the media timeout. Only one possession. Carey’s three pulled Georgetown to w/in 19-18 but that was answered with a Slater three and more short jumper.
Under 8 (6:10) Villanova 19 Georgetown 14
Hoyas went on a 7-0 run to get it within 4 but Villanova answered with a Longino three. Ewing has somewhat gone to what I would do. He’s gone small and is using Billingsley as the post guy. I don’t know if I would’ve used Billingsley (probably Mohammed who was at the scorer’s table). Either way it’s better than using a traditional big.
Under 12 (11:46) Villanova 12 Georgetown 4
Georgetown’s offense continues to struggle getting a good look. Hoyas playing slower but that means more half court basketball. That’s where Ewing’s offense really needs an offensive threat at center. If Ewing goes small then he should look to post one of his wings in the same action he runs when he has in a more traditional lineup.
Under 16 (15:38) Villanova 5 Georgetown 2
Slow start on offense for both teams. 3 out of the 5 Wildcats points have come on free throws. Georgetown have scored on a banked shot by Carey. D Harris has forced two contested jumpers. Ryan Mutombo got an early sub that lasted for roughly 2 minutes.
