Looking back on the Los Angeles Chargers’ game gave hope but, also conjured up some frustration.
Offense:
The offense picked up despite the loss of Ryan Fitzpatrick but opportunities died on the field. Twice, Washington drove deep into Chargers territory only to come up with 6 points. In both instances, especially the first deep drive, the offense could’ve had a touchdown. Even if they split (one touchdown, one field goal), Washington is up 10-7 and not down 7-6.
Back-up, now starter, Tyler Heineke was a respectable 11-15 for 122 yards and a touchdown. Antonio Gibson led Washington on the ground with 90 yards on 20 carries.
Defense:
The defense got off to a rough start and rough ending. Everything in the middle was solid. The defensive scheme didn’t take away either one of the Chargers top receivers. Keenan Allen (9 catches 100 yards) and Mike Williams (8 catches 82 yards and game winning touchdown) had their way.
The Chargers were able to run on the first possession and it ended with a game opening touchdown. After that, the defense was respectable against the run. They gave up an average of 3.1 yards per carry.
With that being said, on the Chargers final drive, the defense had chances to get off the field and give the ball back on offense yet never did it. This allowed Los Angeles to simply run the clock out.
