Despite being ousted by the Atlanta Hawks last night, it’s hard not to see the New York Knicks’ season as a success.
Before the season started, the Knicks over/under on wins was 22.
Armed with a new front office and coach (Tom Thibodeau), the Knicks went 41-31 but there are still a lot of questions.
The first starts with, was this season fool’s gold? On one hand, the Knicks put together this season missing Mitchell Robinson and dealing with two “swing and misses” from the previous administration (Kevin Knox and Frank Ntilikina).
With that being said, it’s also apparent that despite the great season by Julius Randle, he’s far from being a number one option. He continuously struggled in the Atlanta series where he shot 29% and almost average 5 turnovers per game.
New York will have to address some gaping holes in the offseason. They still need an explosive wing on the perimeter, a dependable three point shooter or two, and a point guard. The holes could’ve been filled if the previous front office was competent and the current regime had drafted Tyrese Haliburton, as opposed to, Obi Toppin.
The Knicks have two first round picks in one of the deepest drafts in the last few years. It will be interesting to see if they use both picks or put a package together to move up. The free agent market will also be an interesting place for the Knicks. Has the front office and the hiring of Thibodeau done enough to attract free agents. That’s something that hasn’t happened in several generations.
Only time will tell if this season was a blip on the radar or the start of something.
