Georgetown-Butler Preview

Short-handed Hoyas Travel to Butler

Georgetown’s roster has been thin since four players decided to transfer after the season had started. The Hoyas (14-10, 5-7) could be even thinner this weekend when they travel to Butler on Saturday (2:30 on Fox).

The Hoyas continue to try and shake the injury bug. On Thursday, Georgetown head coach, Patrick Ewing said Omer Yurtseven and Mac McClung were “day-to-day”.

McClung hasn’t played since he hurt himself prior to the game at St. John’s. Yurtseven twisted an ankle in the second half of the Hoyas win over DePaul. The win over the Blue Demons was the last time Georgetown took the court. The Hoyas had a midweek bye which allowed Ewing to give the players what he described as “much needed” rest.

If both players miss Saturday’s game at Butler, Ewing will have to call on some seldom used players. “Timothy Ighoefe might have to play some minutes,” said Ewing. The freshman has only appeared in five games and has yet to play more than five minutes in a game. “His future might be now.”

Georgetown currently sits eighth in the conference. If the Hoyas want to avoid playing on Wednesday of the Big East tournament, they’ll have to find a way to climb out of the eighth spot.

Butler (19-6, 7-5) is coming off 66-61 win over Xavier. The Bulldogs could be without Aaron Thompson (concussion symptoms) and Derrik Smits (knees). Both players are listed as day-to-day. Butler is 12-2 this season at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Georgetown lost the first meeting, 69-64. At one point, the Hoyas led the game by 14 points. Butler’s Sean McDermott tied his career-high with seven three-pointers in the win. Bulldogs opened
the second half scoring 18 of the first 21 points. McDermott scored 11 straight giving the Bulldogs a 50-46 lead. He finished with 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
