Georgetown Basketball: Opening Night

Georgetown kicks off year 3 of the Patrick Ewing era against Mount St. Mary’s.

The Hoyas start the season with a four game homestand before heading to New York City for the 2K Empire Classic.

Hoya Points:

  1. Sophomore Stars: Will the sophomore duo of James Akinjo and Mac McClung show more defensive prowess
  2. Transfer Impact: With Jessie Govan gone, Omer Yurtseven (NC State transfer) will need not only need to match or exceed Govan’s number but also be a physical presence in the paint
  3. LeBlanc Act II: Josh LeBlanc contributed last season a lot faster than most thought. Can he continue to be a consistent rebounder?
  4. Turnover: Last season Georgetown struggled with turnovers. Can the second year for Akinjo help lessen the empty possessions?
  5. Bench Posse: The Hoyas more depth than they have in the Ewing Era. How does he balance the minutes?

Mount St. Mary’s:

  1. Vado Morse (Sophomore) was Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year. He average 14.7 ppg last season
  2. Nine players on the roster are from DC, Maryland, or Virginia.
  3. The Mount was picked to finish 7th in the NEC
  4. If there is a silver lining, Mount St. Mary’s returns 97 percent of the team’s scoring from a year ago.

What to Look For:

With it being opening night, the Hoyas will have opening night “struggles” like every other team in the country. But the place where Georgetown really needs to improve is turnovers. They cannot be loose with the ball whether it’s a close game or a blowout.

Also it will be worth watching how Ewing decides to use his bench. The Hoyas have incredible depth at the guard position. Jagan Mosely, Jahvon Blair, and transfer, Terrell Allen could all be in line to get minutes behind Akinjo and McClung.
