Fans in the DMV (District, Maryland, and Virginia) should be excited about the upcoming season for the Washington Wizards.
I know… I know…. that sounds crazy but hear me out. There are several reasons why you should be at Capital One Arena when the NBA season begins. And, no, this isn’t a Susan O’Malley type of article. I’m not here to tell you to come watch the Wizards to see stars on the other team.
The Wizards have a team that this area could be proud of.
The Wizards have a true NBA star
The Washington Wizards have a true star in Bradley Beal. He’s well respected on and off the court throughout the league. Wizards owner, Ted Leonsis has said several times that he has no interest in trading Beal. If we can take Leonsis at his word, that means this franchise has their first player they can build around since pre-injury Gilbert Arenas.
This isn’t a shot at John Wall. But we’ve seen enough of Wall to know that a team where he’s the best player is only going to take you so far. A backcourt of Wall and Beal can be the East coast version of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. If Wall can adjust his game for the good of the team, then the front office could truly identify what acquisitions would be best for the organization.
Fans in this area would gladly take a Portland Trail Blazers type of team.
An Exciting Rookie
Even though, I was a proponent of the Wizards drafting Cam Reddish, Rui Hachimura was a popular pick. Hachimura comes from a winning program (Gonzaga) plus he’s the future of Japanese National Team.
Hachimura translates to a two-way player on the NBA level and has all-star talent. Though he wasn’t the flashiest player in the draft, he’s a player that plugs in well on this team and can make an immediate impact. He’s far from being a project.
Go-Go-ing
It’s easy to kill the Wizards front office but I’m a firm believer that having a dedicated G-League team helps teams like the Washington Wizards.
Last season, Thomas Bryant was the player who made the sizable jump. It was so big, Bryant was rewarded with a $25M extension.
This season, you can expect Capital City Go-Go alums Troy Brown Jr., Jordan McRae, and Chasson Randle could all play a role throughout the season.
The Wizards aren’t going to the playoffs. They probably won’t win 35 games. But, what they will be is a team worth your attention. You’ll be excited by what your see.
