Third and Long: Ravens D, Lions, and More

Baltimore Defense

Before the season started, I couldn’t stop hearing about how much better the Ravens defense would be. In the words of Jodeci, “I’m still waiting.”

The defense is giving up slightly over 33 points per game. You can argue that the schedule makers didn’t help when three of the Ravens first four games were against the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and Kansas City Chiefs but there was no way they were supposed to be this terrible.

Coming into the Chiefs game, Ravens were without Nnamdi Madubuike (neck), Travis Jones (knee), and Broderick Washington Jr. (ankle) were placed on injured reserve.  Marlon Humphrey (calf), Roquan Smith (hamstring) and Nate Wiggins (elbow) were hurt during the game. Humphrey and Smith will be lost for several weeks.

Lamar Jackson hasn’t been able to make up for the defensive woes before he was injured on Sunday. The Ravens are a heartbeat away from a lost season.

Detroit Back to Being Good

Ahhh, remember the narrative after Detroit’s week one 27-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers?

NFL media and fans were wondering if the Lions offense was all a creation of Ben Johnson and with Johnson in Chicago, Detroit would be a shell of itself.

Dan Campbell and his staff have answered that question with hardy laughter. Since the loss to the Packers, Detroit has won three games in a row. In that span, the Lions have scored 124 points including 52 against Johnson’s Bears.

The Lions replaced both coordinators (Aaron Glenn is now the head coach of the New York Jets) and they look like they are in a good space without them. It just took a week to adjust.

Thank you, Cam

There was a time when football players were allowed to be characters but as endorsement money grew, the character was taken out of the game.

Right or wrong, it was great to hear Cam Ward express his true feelings after the Tennessee Titans loss (26-0) to the Houston Texans.
