George Washington started strong but couldn’t keep it up in the 89-59 loss to Boise State.

The Broncos had a chance to be in the NCAA tournament, but they were left out when North Carolina received a bid.

“Obviously disappointing to lose the way we did, but for 25 minutes, it was a really good basketball game,” said head coach Chris Caputo.

With 15:04 left, Ty Bevins’ three-pointer brought George Washington to within three, but the Broncos would respond with a 17-4 run.

Boise State outscored George Washington 57-33 in the second half. That included going 6-12 from the three in the final 20 minutes.

Year three of the Caputo era has been anything but disappointing for George Washington. The Revolutionaries won 21 games and finished seventh in the Atlantic 10.

“That first 25 minutes is probably more indicative of our season than the last 15 minutes.”

Notes:

  • Darren Buchanan Jr., Jacoi Hutchinson, and Dayan Nessah played despite being in the portal. They combined for six points.
  • This season’s 21 wins was the most since 2015-16 when Mike Lonergan’s squad won 28 games.
  • George Washington committed a season-high 22 turnovers. The turnovers led to 27 points for the Broncos including 18 fast break points
