Fabulous Five is MTC Media’s Top Five Teams
Week one has a heavy SEC feel. No, I’m not a Paul Finebaum
clone, it’s more about how many teams are in the conference, but as the season progresses, I’m sure teams from other conferences will jump into the top five.
Georgia Bulldogs (1-0)
The Bulldogs flexed their muscles with a solid second half against Clemson. Georgia has the depth and skill to wear down opponents in the second half. It remains to be seen how much of the last 30 minutes was Georgia and how much was Clemson but either way, Mark Richt’s squad has enough to make a National Championship run yet again.
Texas Longhorns (1-0)
Quin Ewers is in the latest iteration of the Dr. Pepper commercials, but he still needs to be appreciated more. Ewers (260 yards, three touchdown passes) had an efficient day despite having one interception as the Longhorns destroyed Colorado State 52-0. Texas’ defense was also on full display, limiting the Rams to 192 total yards. We will learn more about Texas when they face Michigan.
Ole Miss Rebels (1-0)
The Rebels took care of Furman the way they should, with a 76-0 win. Jaxson Dart threw for 418 yards and five touchdowns. Ole Miss should cruise over the next five weeks. Lane Kiffin’s crew should not be challenged until the Rebels travel to LSU on October 12th.
Ohio State Buckeyes (1-0)
Kansas State transfer Will Howard couldn’t have scripted a better way to start his Ohio State career. Howard went 17-28 for 228 yards and three touchdowns in the 52-6 win over Akron. The Buckeyes’ defense outscored Akron 14-6.
Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0)
The Tide edged out Notre Dame even though the Fighting Irish had the more impressive win. That’s the tricky thing early on. Do you take the team you think has more talent or the team with the better win? Taking Alabama was more about wanting to see more from Notre Dame. The Crimson Tide rolled Western Kentucky 63-0 in Kalen DeBoer’s debut. Starting quarterback Jalen Milroe looks poised to back up last season’s success.
