A few years ago, an C-Danny Garcia fight would headline a pay-per-view.
In 2024, it’s the perfect combination of intrigue to be on the undercard of the biggest name in boxing.
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) announced that Lara and Garcia will square off on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga fight on September 14th.
The last time we saw Lara (30-3-3) in the ring, he was making quick work of Michael Zerafa. Lara knocked Zerafa out in the second round. A few years ago, there’s no way we saw that. Lara was a master tactician who broke down opponents, including Alvarez, in a controversial loss, but things have changed. Four of Lara’s last five fights, all wins, have ended early. Lara has changed his style to a more aggressive chance-taker to get more paychecks on the back end of his career.
Unlike Lara, who fought earlier this year, Garcia (37-3) was last in the ring in 2022.
Garcia is a pedestrian 4-3 in his last seven fights, and he has to wonder what his career would have looked like had he not lost by split decision to Keith Thurman.
Garcia needed to be more active in the unanimous decision loss to Shawn Porter. On the scorecards, Julie Lederman and Eric Marlinski scored the fight 115-113 for Porter. The loss to Errol Spence was similar. Garcia needed to be more active, and unlike Porter, Spence ensured the fight wasn’t close.
Garcia followed the Spence loss with a majority decision win over Jose Benavidez Jr.
