As the Bahamas men’s basketball team embarks on its Olympic journey, a potential game-changer, Klay Thompson, is on the horizon.
Per The Athletic, Thompson must be approved to play for the Bahamas. It starts with USA Basketball. Thompson played for Team USA in 2016, so USA Basketball would have to sign off on the switch, and then FIBA would need to give him their blessing. The Athletic reports that it’s unlikely that will happen.
Even without Thompson, the Bahamas could have the best pool of players in the country’s history.
Eric Gordon, DeAndre Ayton, and Buddy Hield have helped the Bahamas get this far, and they’re expected to continue through the qualification process.
Kai Jones, AJ Storr, VJ Edgecombe, and Donavan Freeman are other named players eligible to play for the Bahamas.
The Bahamas will compete in a six-team pool with three teams in each pod. In one pool are the Bahamas, Poland, and Finland. The other pod is comprised of Spain, Angola, and Lebanon. The pool winner will advance to the Olympics.
