Commanders Wrap-Up: Detroit Wrecks Washington in Golden Effort

It’s Washington D.C., where some things being torn down are a sign of lunacy and others are necessary.

The Washington Commanders recognize that the defense will need to be reworked in the offseason, but, for now, due to the first-place schedule, it will likely look uglier than the construction of a…

In the 44-22 loss to Detroit, the defense was ineffective and emotionally unstable, as illustrated by Daron Payne’s ejection and Javon Kinlaw’s contact with an official, which probably should have been an ejection.

The fight to blame others, along with the self-loathing, played a part in Lions’ running back, Jahmyr Gibbs 152 152-yard performance. To make it worse, it only took 15 carries for Gibbs to meet that mark.

Running back David Montgomery had 71 yards on 15 carries.

The pass defense wasn’t much better.

There was no need for Jared Goff to play the entire game, but he made the most of the time he played, throwing for 320 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Jameson Williams was the one who threw the awful pass in last year’s playoff game, but he more than made up for it today with six receptions for 119 yards.

On offense, Washington (3-7) can’t stretch the field. If it wasn’t for Deebo Samuels, who knows what this team would do?

The problem with the wide receiver position stems back to the offseason when Terry McLaurin and the front office couldn’t reach an agreement in a timely fashion. McLaurin joined the team late and eventually got injured.

Even if McLaurin reported on time, Washington’s wide receiver room still had a lot of questions. Kliff Kingsbury’s passing game worked last season because of Jayden Daniels’ play and the ability to scheme up big plays. It’s been difficult to do that with Daniels being in and out of the lineup and a receiving core that looks like a high school in rural Virginia.

Washington has lost five games in a row.

The Commanders head to Madrid next Sunday to meet the Miami Dolphins with Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos after that.

That’s followed by a trip to Minnesota to face the Vikings, a road rematch with the resurgent New York Giants, Philadelphia, and Dallas at home, and a finale at Philadelphia.

If Washington loses to Miami, they might not win a game the rest of the way.

The season is shaping up to be as unsightly as the construction of Pennsylvania Avenue.
