Virginia (2-1) took advantage of its “get right” week with a 55-16 win over William & Mary.
Up next is a home date with Stanford in the Cavaliers’ ACC opener.
Stanford (1-2) is coming off its first win of the season last week. The Cardinal defeated Boston College 30-20 in its home opener.
Keys:
Keep Diversifying:
The Cavaliers’ offense has been good in the air and on the ground. Chandler Morris has been everything Virginia could ask for. Morris can make most of the throws and has some wheels to escape the rush and gain yards.
Trell Harris, Cam Ross, and Jahmal Edrine have formed a solid trio at wide receiver.
Then there’s a backfield. J’Mari Taylor punished North Carolina State on the ground and was solid last week in limited carries. Noah Taylor has been a solid backup and has had productive carries.
There’s no reason for the offense not to score 30 points.
Choke Off the Run
North Carolina State chopped up Virginia’s run defense. In Stanford’s win last week, running back Micah Ford went for 157 yards on just 17 carries. Ford is the biggest concern for the Virginia defense.
When BYU shut Ford down, the Cardinal offense was nonexistent.
Without the running game, Stanford’s offense can’t compete on the scoreboard with Virginia.
Don’t Look Ahead
Florida State is coming to Charlottesville next Friday, so it’s easy to try to get by the Stanford game, but that leads to upsets.
The coaching staff is responsible for making sure this doesn’t happen.
The right game plan and execution, and the Cavaliers could have an opportunity to play the backups midway in the fourth quarter.
