Virginia Football: NC State Keys

Chandler Morris Health
Tony Elliott indicated that he expects Morris to play. When asked what his expectations for Morris on Saturday was, Elliott said “to play his tail off.” Morris was a “full go” in practice.

Morris had caught fire last week before getting hurt on a 28-yard scramble.

He had started establishing rhythm with Cam Ross (7 receptions, 124 yards) and Trell Harris (3 receptions, 93 yards).

There was also a sense of knowing when to run and when to pass. Morris finished with 50 yards rushing.
Against, the Wolfpack, Morris must continue to find opportunities to stretch the field the way he did against Coastal Carolina. It will help the running game.

Can the Cavs Run the Ball
Last week NC State held East Carolina to 30 yards rushing on 29 carries. Virginia’s running game didn’t exactly move the needle.

Noah Vaughn led the running backs in yards with 45 but some of that came in the fourth quarter when the quality of play had dipped. Xavier Brown 28 yards rushing with four out of his 10 carries going for 2 yards or less.

In a perfect world, Morris won’t lead the Cavaliers in rushing yards, but the offensive line will help a lot to do with that.

Containing Wesley Grimes
Last week, Grimes had his first career 100 yard receiving game. CJ Bailey hit him on a 48-yard touchdown pass as Grimes finished with 121 yards on four receptions.

Dealing with Bailey will presents more of a challenge than dealing with Coastal Carolina’s MJ Morris.

Bailey is mobile enough that you have to keep an eye on his outside of the pocket. He will also keep his eyes down the field looking for a big play and that’s where Grimes comes into play.
