Commanders: Here We Go Again

Once again, the Washington Commanders are in the news about their former name. It’s the fly in the house that won’t go away.

This time around, two items in the news brought on the conversation.

The first was Donald Trump’s comment about the organization bringing back the name.

“I wouldn’t have changed the name,” Trump said. “It just doesn’t have the same — it doesn’t have the same ring to me.”

The second was the unveiling of the “Super Bowl Era” alternate jerseys.

“We are excited to celebrate Washington’s rich history with these iconic, Super Bowl Era uniforms this season,” Commanders Team President Mark Clouse said via press release. “Ever since Josh Harris and our ownership group acquired the team back in 2023, they’ve placed great value in finding ways to connect the past and present and pay homage to those that made the Burgundy & Gold what it is today.”

For fans of the old name, this is the closest it has been to the name and original logo making a reappearance.

All the while, the DC government is stalling on approving the stadium deal ownership, and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser had negotiated.

Does this give Maryland hope that the Commanders could return to the state along with a nickname change? It might still be a long shot, but it isn’t off the table.

Either way, in the current climate, fans on both sides of the discussion know that the old nickname is back in play.
