Georgetown came into last night’s Villanova on a three-game losing streak.
The Hoyas have been physically beaten for most of the Big East season. They were down nine points with 3:43 left before staging a 75-73 comeback win over the Wildcats.

I can’t say it enough. Jayden Epps deserves so much credit.
Last season, Epps was asked to be a volume shooter on a talent-deficient roster. That meant taking shots that were often questioned, not because he was selfish but because they were needed.
With an improved roster, Epps was required to play a different role. Even though it sounds easy, it isn’t easy to transition from more of a “we need your points to win” to “your points are a part of winning.”
Last night, when it was closing time, head coach Ed Cooley called Epps’ number, and he delivered two big free throws down the stretch and the game-winning layup with five seconds left.
Drew Fielder avoided foul trouble, grabbed seven rebounds, and had a career-high four assists while playing all 40 minutes. All are numbers that contribute to winning despite shooting 2-for-7 from the field.
On the surface, Georgetown’s record of 17-13 (8-11 Big East) might not jump off the page, but it should.
Players in the portal can see what Cooley did for Micah Peavy. This is the same Peavy that was pigeon-holed as a defense-only player under Jamie Dixon at TCU.
Under Cooley, Peavy has shown college basketball that he’s one of the best two-way players in the country.
If you’re a big, Cooley’s offense shows you have a place on all three levels. Just ask Thomas Sorber what it has done for his draft stock. Sorber gets to play on all three scoring levels on offense.
Even when Sorber went down and Cooley had to adjust the offense, Fielder still received those touches, albeit not as many.
There’s a lot to like about this team, flaws and all.
Cooley has Georgetown on the right path to restore its place in college basketball, and when that happens, remember that it started with this roster.
