Not Every Perfect Marriage Needs to Happen

There’s a widespread belief that perfect marriages only exist in Hollywood. It’s usually a sappy movie with eye-rolling scenarios that make most utter the words, “That wouldn’t happen in the real world.”

Sometimes, those marriages happen in sports. In the NBA, the most notable “perfect marriage” in the modern era was between Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson. In the NFL, Joe Montana and Bill Walsh had a run to multiple Super Bowl rings.

The latest “perfect marriage” being discussed hails from Dallas.

Last week, several outlets reported that Jerry Jones and Deion Sanders had discussed the Dallas Cowboys head coaching opening.

The media and fans lost their minds. Jones and Sanders working together would be the “perfect marriage,” but not in the same way Jordan-Jackson and Walsh-Montana were.

None of the discussions involved the Cowboys on the field. There was little to no talk about how Sanders would jive with franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. What would Sanders’ coaching staff look like? Yeah, no one had time to talk about that either.

All anyone wanted to talk about was the off-the-field stuff. Sanders perfect fit would be Jones having a co-star when dealing with the media. Just think of the quotes. The stories would write themselves, and there would be plenty to write about, win or lose.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this much universal giddiness.

What would a Sanders-led team look like for those who care about the on-the-field product?

How would Sanders pivot to a locker room full of grown men who could see him as a once great player but a coach that’s over his head? Will they tune him out at the first sign of a three-game losing streak?

What if Sanders turns out to be Matt Rhule? It’s one thing for that to happen in Carolina, but it would be an almost daily circus in Dallas.

Of course, I could be wrong. Sanders could come in from college, captivate the locker room, and find a way to get Jerry back to the Super Bowl. Could you imagine what Super Media Week would look like? Woo-wee!

But for that to happen, the Cowboys would have to hit a home run with the staff hiring, something Antonio Pierce and the Raiders failed to do, along with the front office roster construction for which Jerry and his son aren’t winning any awards.

Without that information, this is far from being a perfect marriage. Not Every Perfect Marriage Needs to Happen
