Keys
Keep Marquette off the Foul Line:
Marquette wants space from sideline to sideline in the halfcourt. They want to create driving lanes through their actions and attack in transition. Georgetown cannot help Marquette by fouling. This can’t be a game where the Hoyas are in the penalty with over 8 minutes left in the half. Not only will that give Marquette a chance at “Free Points” but also, Georgetown’s bench is thin. They can’t sustain a bunch of foul trouble, even though they got away with it against Xavier.
Get in the Paint via the Dribble:
Georgetown does a good job throwing the ball in the post, but as the season progresses, more and more teams are doubling the posts from different angles. That caused Thomas Sorber to try to finish in traffic. Part of the reason why this happens is because Georgetown can’t generate paint touches off the dribble unless it’s through action. One of their favorite actions is the middle screen action involving Malik Mack/Jayden Epps, and Thomas Sorber. In this game, the Hoyas will have opportunities to touch the paint off the bounce if they attack on time and not hold the ball and survey the defense.
Don’t Let Marquette Get Seconds and Thirds:
Marquette can kill a team by getting long rebounds and stickbacks because of how hard they attack the rim and the threes they take in transition. Georgetown must be able to dominate the boards and use Marquette’s long rebounds and the first pass on Georgetown’s fast break. The Hoyas need to get easy baskets in transition to help loosen up the offense.
