Culture: Comfort Not Qualified (VIP)

Despite how Dallas has played this season, he is pleased with Mike McCarthy and the coaching staff.

No matter whose fault you think it is or isn’t, McCarthy has done enough, whether it’s this season’s dismal record or the playoff disappointment, to be fired by NFL standards.

McCarthy’s job security shouldn’t be shocking if you’ve paid attention to how Jones operates. Jones has been pretty transparent about hiring the coach he’s most comfortable with, not necessarily the coach who’s most qualified.

That’s how the NFL’s most recognizable franchise has had Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Wade Phillips, and Jason Garrett as head coaches. Unlike the Raiders franchise, win or lose, the Cowboys head coaching job has always been valuable. There’s no reason to have settled for the coaches on that list, but it wasn’t about qualifications or best fits. It was about comfort.

To be fair to Jones, sports, both college and pro, aren’t the only places where comfort is paramount when hiring.
