It’s only December.
It’s the time of year in college basketball when the AP ranking serves as nothing more than an advertisement for the networks who know that the general public is still locked in on the NFL.
Being ranked means a lot more for programs that are trying to gain respect or need some ammunition in their recruiting arsenal.
For Maryland (10-2, 1-1), being ranked isn’t necessarily a need. It’s a statement that in year three of the Kevin Willard era, the Terps are on a path the haven’t been on since Covid usurped Mark Turgeon’s best season in College Park.
The numbers support an argument for Maryland to be ranked and not barely ranked.
