ACC Football Notebook: SMU In Play

Last Saturday saw the ACC’s biggest shake-up in the standings.

Clemson’s home loss to Louisville and SMU’s win in the battle of the ranked teams over Pitt have made SMU and Miami the only undefeated teams in the conference.

The Mustangs and Hurricanes do not play each other.

Both teams will be favored in the remaining games.

SMU is at home to Boston College, at Virginia, and at home against Cal. None of the three teams has the offense to keep up with the Mustangs for 60 minutes.

The Hurricanes are at Georgia Tech, at home against Wake, and at Syracuse. The Syracuse game looked tougher a few weeks ago before the Orange started struggling. It took the Orange overtime to beat Virginia Tech at home after being beaten 41-13 at Pitt.

Can the ACC get two teams in the College Football Playoff? It’s a possibility.

The College Football Playoff committee has indicated that losing in the conference championship game will not be as punitive as it has been in the past.

If a one-loss SMU team beats Miami in the ACC Championship game, the ACC can get two teams in. It is hard to believe that if Miami runs the table in the regular, they won’t all but wrap up a spot in the playoff.

Other ACC Games:
Syracuse at Boston College
(19) Clemson at Virginia Tech
Duke at NC State
Florida State at (10) Notre Dame
Virginia at (23) Pitt
