Film Breakdown: Ryan Dunn vs. the Clippers (VIP)

When Ryan Dunn played at Virginia, teams did not consider him a three-point threat and didn’t think of him as an offensive threat.

Last season, as the Cavaliers struggled offensively, I spoke to an NBA scout who insisted they could get more out of Dunn. He was right. Dunn is an example of two things.

Every system is only made for some players, and NBA scouts occasionally get things wrong, but they are good at their job.

In Dunn’s two seasons in Charlottesville, he averaged 6.1 shot attempts per game and a high of only one three-point attempt per game. He left the Cavaliers as a career 23.5% three-point shooter.

Things have changed in the NBA.

It’s still early in the season, but Dunn is shooting 44% of three shots in Phoenix. Even more impressive is that his accuracy has come from other places besides the corner. Per Cleaning the Glass, Dunn is shooting 43% on Corner Threes and 45% on Non-Corner Threes.

The expectation is that those numbers will drop, but it’s impressive from a player who wasn’t given that leeway in college.

Ryan Dunn’s second-quarter three-point shooting helped the Suns erase a 20+ first-half deficit in the Suns’ 125-119 win over the Clippers.

Dunn was an effective catch-and-shoot guy when Booker played the role of primary ballhandler.
