For the first time in 15 years, when Virginia hosted its media day, Tony Bennett wasn’t there.
The honor went to interim head coach Ron Sanchez.
For those concerned about a drastic shift, it’s important to note that this isn’t a Penn State situation, where the coaching staff underwent a major change from Micah Shrewsberry to Mike Rhoades.
There’s a reason why Sanchez was on Bennett’s staff. Though there might be slight differences in philosophy, overall, things will look familiar to fans and opponents even though a coach warned me to withhold judgment because Sanchez has only had the team for a week.
As for the players, the message was clear.
