Jayden Daniels left the game against the Carolina Panthers in the first quarter with a rib injury.
Behind Marcus Mariota and a defense that knows how to dominate bad offenses, the Washington Commanders walked away with an easy 40-7 win.
Washington’s defense held Andy Dalton to 93 yards passing and two interceptions, including Dexter Fowler’s pick-six. The Panthers only managed 180 total yards.
Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard had 52 yards on 17 carries.
The game resembled something from the 1991 season.
The win moved Washington to 5-2, and just as important, the fan base is starting to heal after spending the last generation lost in the forest under Dan Snyder’s leadership.
The next question is when the Commanders will update Daniels’ status on Monday. After halftime, Daniels came out of the locker room and spent the second half supporting Mariota on the sideline. It conveys that Daniels is okay, but sometimes looks are deceiving.
Mariota started slowly, but the more snaps he took, the more in rhythm he looked. He went 18-23 for 205 yards and two touchdowns.
Terry McLaurin had six receptions on six targets. Zach Ertz had four receptions and a touchdown.
Brian Robinson Jr. was back from injury and had 71 yards on 12 carries.
Despite not having the early favorite for Rookie of the Year, the offense didn’t miss a bit.
Other than Daniels’ injury, today couldn’t have gone better. Washington got up big against a bad team, rendering most of the game an audition for backups. The performance was something that division winners do. Something that no one thought they would see in Washington
