Virginia and Tony Elliott have reached the part of the schedule that could define the program’s next step.

The Cavaliers (3-0, 1-0) are coming off a win over Coastal Carolina and a bye week, and now Boston College (4-1, 1-0) comes to town.

Last week, the Eagles squeaked by Western Kentucky 21-20.

Keys:

Pressure: Boston College has given up a combined six sacks in the last two games. Starting quarterback Thomas Castellanos is back after missing the Western Kentucky game with an undisclosed injury. The Cavaliers’ defense must box in Castellanos inside the pocket and keep contain on the edges.

Choke Off the Run: The Eagles have a two-headed monster at running back. Treshaun Ward and Kyle Robichaux have split carries nearly 50-50. Head coach Bill O’Brien has gone with the “hot” running back for that individual game. Robichaux had 18 carries last week, while Ward had 6. The week before (Michigan State), O’Brien split the carries more towards 50-50. The Cavaliers’ defense must contain the two on first down. Prevent the Eagles from having second down and five yards or less.

Balance: In Boston College’s loss to Missouri, the Tigers established balance. Missouri ran the ball 43 times and threw it 30. Due to the success of the run game at Coastal Carolina, Virginia was run-heavy. Everything will be going right if the Cavaliers are run-heavy against Boston College. What can’t happen is Virginia becomes one-dimensional if it is via the pass. Anthony Colandrea has been known to be careless with the ball at times, which could spell disaster against the Eagles.
