Virginia (2-1) is in the classic “don’t let the team beat you twice” situation.

Last weekend, the Cavaliers lost to Maryland in a prime-time home game. The loss let some of the air out of Tony Elliott’s balloon. It’s a testament to what Elliott has done this season. He’s given Virginia fans a sneak peek into his vision of the program in year three.

Up next for Virginia is a road game at Coastal Carolina (3-0).

If the Cavaliers (-3.5) need motivation, the Chanticleers are among the most popular underdog picks.

Coastal Carolina’s running game is strong, ranked 13th in the nation against light competition. In the wins over Jacksonville State, William & Mary, and Temple, running back Christian Washington has rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns.

Last week, Virginia’s defense gave up 128 yards on the ground, but they held Maryland to under four yards per carry.

Offensively, quarterback Anthony Colandrea can’t turn the ball over. When Colandrea doesn’t turn the ball over, his ability to extend plays with his mobility is a difference-maker.

That’s where the Cavaliers’ running game could help them. Getting Kobe Pace started early would get Virginia in the play-action fake portion of its playbook—something Virginia could desperately use.

Key:

Virginia needs to get off to a fast start on the road. Getting the running backs and the offensive line in a rhythm would help Colandrea out. It can’t be said enough. Colandrea needs to be responsible with the ball. On defense, getting Coastal Carolina behind the chains and forcing Chanticleers quarterback Ethan Vasko into making plays.
