Wizards Continue Strong Offseason

Coming off a strong draft, the Washington Wizards continue to chart their direction of the rebuild.

According to various reports, the Wizards have signed center Jonas Valanciunas to a three-year $30M contract. This move is in line with the Wizards’ long-term plans and will enable them to integrate Alex Sarr into the team at a comfortable pace.

Despite his struggles defensively, Valanciunas is still an effective player on offense. Last season, Valanciunas averaged 12.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He shot 55.9% from the floor and 30.8% on 3-pointers.

Washington also re-signed 6’10” Richaun Holmes to a two-year deal.

The Wizards were one of the worst rebounding teams last season. Valunciunas will help in that category. It will also allow Washington to throw the ball in the post on offense.

As Michael Winger and his crew rebuild the Wizards around long, lengthy players, Valunciunas seems to divert from that philosophy, but the front office knows the roster needs a back-to-the-basket offensive presence.

There are still gaping holes in the roster. Washington doesn’t have consistent perimeter shooting.

Then there’s the Malcolm Brogdon acquisition. Will Washington keep him, or is he nothing more than a trade chip?

Last season, Washington decided not to trade Tyus Jones at the deadline. The Wizards could re-sign him at starting point guard money or try to work out a sign-and-trade.
