The July 20th matchup between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul has been postponed because of Tyson’s injury (ulcer).
“During a follow up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” read an official statement.
However, the wait for the new fight date won’t be long, as it will be announced on June 7th, giving us all something to look forward to.
The postponement, rather than a setback, could potentially be a blessing in disguise, setting the stage for an even more intense and exciting showdown.
Several big-time fights have lived up to the hype, and that has taken some steam out of the Tyson-Paul matchup.
The headlines have been dominated by Canelo’s win over Munguia, Lomachenko’s comeback fight, and Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury.
Even though exhibitions have become more popular, the most successful fights are usually during a lull in the boxing schedule.
When top headliners fight, especially against each other, exhibitions between a YouTuber and an over-the-hill former champion aren’t going to captivate fans, especially when it’s a pay-per-view.
Deontay Wilder-Zhilie Zhang is a pay-per-fight taking place this weekend.
With pay-per-view being a standard way for consumers to watch a fight, promoters must be careful when scheduling so it makes sense for Tyson-Paul to fall in between big fights.
Looking at the schedule, it makes sense for the rescheduled date to either be in August before Canelo Alvarez fights on Mexican Independence Weekend (assuming he schedules a fight that weekend like he’s done for years) or a few weeks after.
