Notre Dame Basketball: Takeaways from Boston College

Road conference wins are something that is coveted in all of c0llege basketball.

If you let one slip away, it can around in the ‘what might have been’ bend.

Notre Dame (7-11, 2-5) will have to be careful not to let its 63-59 loss at Boston College (11-6, 2-4) linger.

Takeaways:

It Comes With Being Young: If there was ever a story of a tale of two halves it was Markus Burton. The freshman looked nearly flawless in the first half. He made shots but, more importantly, he made the right basketball play. By halftime, Burton had 15 points, 2 assists, and 0 turnovers. The second half was borderline disastrous. Burton seemed to press as the game got closer especially after picking up his third foul. The second half line was 4 points, 1 assist, and 7 turnovers. Sometimes younger players play without thinking when things are going right like they were in the first half and then overthink when things start getting tighter like it did in the second half. It’s something Notre Dame hopes Burton gets better at as the season progresses.

Slow After The Half: Notre Dame probably should’ve been up by more than seven at the half considering how they played. How they came out in the second half was hard to describe. It looked like Boston College came out with a purpose while Notre Dame acted like they were owed a second half that looked like the first. By the under 16 media timeout, the Irish were up by one point having lost the lead the possession before Braeden Shrewsberry hit a jumper. The rest of the half was a tight affair with both teams having runs with perhaps the biggest coming after the Irish had taken a six point lead with 5:12 left. Over the next 3:21, Boston College would go on a 7-0 run all compliments of Quinten Post.

Last  Play: Give Micah Shrewsberry credit for the last play drawn up. With Notre Dame down two and having the ball on the baseline, Carey Booth set a screen and popped to the three point line. Since Boston College had to honor the cutter, Booth had a wide-open three point shot that was halfway down before coming out. It was just a bad break for Booth on a day where he struggled shooting.
