Georgetown Pregame: DePaul

Just like the game against Creighton, Georgetown’s opponent is looking for their first Big East win also.

Today it’s DePaul.

During the Patrick Ewing Era, the DePaul game was known as the Battle for the Bottom. It’s a place where Ewing and DePaul head coach Tony Stubblefield had permanent residence status.

Luckily for the Hoyas, Ed Cooley is working to change that in the future but for now, Georgetown is on the struggle bus.

The Hoyas have lost 3 in a row.

Georgetown’s loss to Creighton was a good barometer for the Hoyas to figure out how far the program needs to go to not only win now but win over an extended period of time.

DePaul has lost three of their last four. In that stretch, their only win came against Chicago State.

For those not familiar with the Blue Demons, they’re led by guard Chico Carter Jr.

Carter Jr. averages 12.7 points per game. He shoots 40% on 2 pointers and 39.7% from three where he attempts 45.7% of his shots.

As a team, DePaul hits 34% of their threes and they’ve attempt 15+ threes in every game except one.

Three other starters average in double-digits:

Jeremiah Oden
Da’Sean Nelson
Elijah Fisher

Speaking of three-pointers, the Hoyas dependence on the three-point shot is troubling. It’s one thing to get it in the flow of the offense but, as of late, Georgetown is totally depending on it.

In their first three Big East games, Georgetown has attempted 183 shots from the field, 72 have been from three. That’s 39.3% of their attempts. I’m not sure this team can have that high of a number throughout conference season especially with Jayden Epps dinged up.

The Hoyas do not have a guy who can gobble up real estate and create a shot from the top or the wing. In today’s basketball, it’s a must even if you have an incredible shooting team. You need shot creation and the Hoyas don’t have the creators to no fault of Cooley.

KEYS:

Georgetown must limit DePaul to one shot. The Hoyas are allowing offensive rebounds 32.6% of possessions. That’s 294th in the country.

Giving up second shots along with turning the ball over is a recipe for disaster. The Hoyas are turning the ball over on 19.7% of their possessions. That’s 286th in the country. So the Hoyas are allowing multiple possessions in a single possession and they’re bringing a full bucket full of empty possessions on offense. Luckily for Georgetown, DePaul is equally as inept in both of those categories.

Points in the Paint: Georgetown can’t live on the three point line. Against DePaul, the Hoyas should be able to get 30+ points in the paint.
