Creighton-Colorado St. Takeaways

Colorado State got their first win over a top-10 since 1984 when they defeated UTEP in Fort Collins.

The Rams upset eighth-ranked Creighton, 69-48.

Colorado State’s Isaiah Stevens finished with 20 points.

Ryan Kalkbrenner had 12 points and 7 rebounds from Creighton.

Not So Mighty 16: Creighton shot 16% in the first half, 28% for the game. Give Colorado State’s defense a ton of credit. The Rams don’t necessarily defend you for live turnovers, but they make it incredibly tough to get a good look at the basket. What that does is wear down offenses by making your primary ballhandlers and shot makers feel uncomfortable.

It kept the Bluejays from getting into an offensive flow and, surprisingly, ran Creighton’s offense deep into the shot clock.

Trey Alexander doesn’t have many off nights but today was one of them and this one was bad. Alexander shot 1-16 from the floor.

Baylor Scheierman was harassed into a 4-17 shooting night with most of his shots coming at the end of a good Rams’ contest.

Isaiah Stevens Stays Hot: Stevens has had one heck of a start to the season. He’s had, at least, 15 points in five out of Colorado State’s first six games. Stevens showed patience with his offense in the first half. Brilliantly using screens that would put him one pass away from the ball and in a position to threaten.

Stevens was more attacking off the bounce in the second half where he shot 6-11 from the floor. Stevens used ball screens to gain enough space to get his shot off without a hard close out.

When he wasn’t hitting his own shots, he was an assist wizard off of dribble penetration. Stevens finished with 20 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

Free Throw Deficiency: With Creighton struggling with their perimeter shooting, getting to the free throw line was a must. The Bluejays only attempted 13 free throws. It was a two-pronged problem. Creighton’s jump shooters didn’t put their head down and get two feet in the paint and Colorado State did a good job of playing physical without fouling on shot attempts.
