Virginia-Georgia Tech Wrap-Up

Georgia Tech went on an offensive explosion that saw them go on a stretch of scoring five times on six possessions en route to a 45-17 win over Virginia.

The Cavaliers had gone through a five-game stretch of good football, but that took a step back today.

Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King was 23-30 for 208 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Haynes was also a force on the ground, gaining 83 yards on seven carries. Georgia Tech running back Jamal Haynes had 119 yards on 17 carries.

Virginia’s Malik Washington had 11 receptions for 109 yards.

Up 24-10 at halftime, Georgia Tech scored on their first possession of the second half, pushing the lead to 21.

The Yellow Jackets would score two more times in the fourth quarter. The first came on Dontae Smith’s 10-yard run. The second was courtesy of a 43-yard touchdown run by Jamal Haynes.

Virginia scored with 8:47 left in the fourth on a Kobe Pace eight-yard touchdown reception.

The first half was a series of ups and downs for Virginia.

In many ways, they outplayed Georgia Tech for a chunk of the first half, but injuries and turnovers took away all the advantages they gained.

Tony Muskett had a chance at a big play, but he was hit as he released the ball. Instead of a big play that would’ve put the Cavaliers in the red zone, Myles Sims intercepted the ball.

To make matters worse, that would be the only possession Muskett would see because he was hurt on the play.

The following possession, Tony Elliott went with Grady Brosterhous at quarterback. Behind a couple of solid runs Mike Hollins and Brosterhous’ first career completion, Virginia was on the move. But, on the same drive, Elliott replaced Brosterhous with Anthony Colandrea.

Colandrea would complete back-to-back passes, with the second being a touchdown pass to Joshua Rawlings.

After giving up a field goal to the Yellow Jackets, Virginia would drive back down the field only to have Will Bettridge miss a 48-yard field goal.

With Georgia Tech ahead 10-7, Virginia again had good field position, but they couldn’t take advantage.

Colandrea 3rd and 1, Colandrea would fumble the ball back to Georgia Tech at UVA’s 49-yard line.

With the offense sputtering, the defense started wilting.

The Yellow Jackets scored on four out of their last five drives of the first half, giving them a 24-10 lead at halftime.

Notes:

  • Malik Washington is the fastest receiver (in terms of games) to get 1,000 yards receiving
  • Grady Brosterhaus completed the first pass of his career
  • Tight End Joshua Rawlings scored his first career touchdown
  • By playing today, Tony Colandrea has lost his redshirt
