David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant Takeaways

David Benavidez overcame a slow start to defeat Caleb Plant by unanimous decision.

The Official Scorecards were 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111.

Takeaways:

Ring size: I don’t care who agreed to what but there’s no way boxing can have a 22×22 ring. If Plant believed he needed that to win then he should haven’t taken the fight. This happened in the rematch between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. Most of the time, I don’t necessarily agree with the “bad for boxing” crowd but this was bad for boxing.

Benavidez’s patience: It took a while, but Benavidez finally cut off the ring and batter Plant. Getting to that point, took a lot of patience. Benavidez could have made it easier on himself by using the jab more early on but he get to where he needed to get to with enough rounds left to win going away.

Kenny Bayless: This one is hard. Bayless usually does his best job in the biggest fights but this wasn’t his night. He continually let Plant reach out and clutch and grab. To make matters worse, he would find a way to warn Benavidez about something that didn’t impact the fight. Everyone has an off night and lets just hope in the future, we see the real Kenny Bayless.
