Commanders look to replace Turner

The Washington Commanders have an open Offensive Coordinator position.

Scott Turner was fired in early January and, despite, reports that the Commanders will be sold before week 1 of the NFL season, they are operating as if everything is normal.

There’s nothing wrong with that. There’s no public confirmation from Dan Snyder that he won’t be in the owner’s box when next season kicks off so why not act in this fashion?

The problem is whether it’s “fair” to the incoming ownership to have a fresh contract on the books especially if it’s Eric Bienemy.

Bienemy has been the poster child of what’s wrong with NFL coaching searches.

He has the same job as Andy Reid, which has opened up head coaching jobs for two other coaches yet the NFL has continued to overlook Bienemy.

A new ownership group will certainly want to change the current structure. It’s hard to believe that a group paying billions to take over a dysfunctional franchise would leave the power structure in place.

That would mean the end to Ron Rivera to have the final answer on all things football.

Everything could change including off-the-field things like cap strategy and coaching salaries. Snyder gave Rivera incredible leeway. Leeway he probably shouldn’t have.

Bienemy has commanded an offense that has won two of the last four Super Bowls.

There’s a reason why Washington wants to bring him in the fold.

So, on paper, hiring Bienemy is a good move. You get a proven entity but with the uncertainty surrounding the organization, why would he take it?

For Bienemy he’s between a rock and a hard place.

He’s done everything his predecessors in Kansas City have done yet he hasn’t gotten the same opportunities.

But leaving Kansas City for an organization that could be in upheaval might not be the best decision either.
