Georgetown Pregame: Texas Tech

Hoyas come into tonight’s game against Texas Tech as a 16.5 point underdog. The Red Raiders are 4-2 and are coming off a loss to Ohio State.

Texas Tech has three double digit scores led by Kevin Obanor’s 13.5 points per game.

The Hoyas are coming off a 79-70 win over UMBC.

Keys:

The Hoyas have spent the season living and dying by their guards.

Primo Spears controls how the offense runs and his distribution is the key.

When his decision-making is good, Georgetown’s offense can score in the 70s. When he blindly attacks off the dribble into two and three defenders, his game looks AAU-ish.

Spears is the key to Georgetown looking competent against the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech hasn’t been a beacon of ball protection. The rank 289th in turnover percentage. How motivated Georgetown is on defense, will determine is that will be a factor. The Hoyas have been good for bringing good ball pressure in spurts but it has been far from being consistent.

In fact, the Hoyas’ defense would be struggling even more if Akok Akok wasn’t a bonified rim-protector.

On offense Georgetown is one of the worst two-point shooting team.

The Hoyas ranks 235th in 2P%.

The reason why the ranking is so low is because the Hoyas tend to take a lot of contested two-point shots. Spears and backcourt mate, Brandon Murray are the worst offenders.

Both, Spears and Murray shoot under 45% from two. Murray checks in at 37.3% from inside the arc.
