Boxing: George Kambosos brings boxing back down under

It’s easy to forget that George Kambosos is the boxer who has won the biggest fight not Devin Haney.

It was Kambosos (20-0-0) who defeated undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez.

The win showed how tough Kambosos could be. The high of all highs was putting the loud talking Lopez on the canvas in the first round. The toughness was displayed in the 10th round when Kambosos tasted the canvas himself.

But, at the end of the night, Kambosos’ hand was raised as the winner in the split decision (115-112 and 115-111 for Kambosos, 114-113 for Lopez).

Despite the upset and all the belts that came with it, Kambosos comes into Saturday night’s (Sunday in Australia) fight as the underdog.

Odds:
Devin Haney -165
George Kambosos +140

“I love the underdog status,” said Kambosos. “They’ve been against me my whole career. They’ve been saying that my whole career.”

Underdog or not, Kambosos made true to his promise. If you want the belts, you’ll have to come to Australia to get them. And if Haney wins, the rematch will also take place Down Under.

It’s obvious that Kambosos doesn’t think he’ll need the rematch.

“I’m still the top dog, and after Sunday, I’ll remain the top dog.”
