Beltway Battles: Round 2 undercards blog

Our first fight of the night… by the way, it isn’t the first fight on the bout sheet, is David Stevens (9-0, 6KOs) vs Colby Courter (14-17, 10 KOs).

Stevens connects with a straight right hand followed by a left hook and Courter hits the canvas. It only takes a few seconds later for Courter to hit the canvas again and the first fight in in the box.

Fight stopped 2:20 in the first round.

Stevens stays perfect as he gets his 7th KO in 10 fights.

Nadim Salloum (7-1, 3 KOs) vs Elie Augustama (6-17, 3 KOs) – Salloum UD

First round was a feeling out round. Salloum landed the best punch of the round. He connected on the short overhand right.

Second round was all Salloum. Landed several combinations including a right hand that literally stopped Augustama in his tracks.

Salloum dominates a round where it looked like he would take off but Augustama isn’t even throwing punches. He’s following Salloum around he ring eating punches.

Both fighters landed good clean punches. Salloum’s best punch came on a counter straight right and Augustama land two clean overhand rights near the end of the round.

Fifth round was all Salloum. He landed several combinations that had Augustama frozen in time. Through five, I have Salloum pitching a shutout.

Solloum closes the show with a strong sixth round. MTC Media has the fight scored 60-54.

Official Scorecards: 59-55, 60-54, 60-54 all in favor of Salloum

Wuesi Johnson (3-20-1) vs Donnell Poe (1-0, 1 KO) – Poe Split Decision

Neither fighters landed anything of consequence … I’m not sure if they landed anything. Definitely a feeling out round. Could justify scoring it for either fighter.

A lot more action in the second round. Of course everything is relative right. I liked what Johnson did in the second round of the fight. Johnson landed the cleaner punches and won the round on my card.

Another razor close round but I narrowly gave it to Poe. It’s one of those rounds you put an asterisk beside it denoting that it could’ve gone either way.

The fourth round was the best round of the fight. Both fighters had their moments. Poe had more especially when you consider the first half of the round.

MTC Media Scorecard: 38-38

Official Scorecards: 39-37 Poe, 40-36 Johnson, 39-37 Poe

Hugh Hinds (1-3) vs La’vay Lawrence Pro Debut – Lawrence TKO (2:08) 3rd Round

Lawrence gets his first knockdown in under one minute. He’s all over Hinds.

Lawrence is beating Hinds around the ring. I cannot believe Hinds survived the first round. Outside of a knockout, Lawrence couldn’t have scripted a better first round.

The second round was another dominant one by Lawrence. I don’t know how much more punishment Hinds can take. Ref might want to have a short leash in the third round. Gotta protect the fighter.

Stopped in the third round. Dominating performance by Lawrence.

Joseph Veazey (6-0, 4 KOs) vs Corey Champion (2-4, 2 KOs) – Veazey UD

In a round that didn’t offer much, Veazey landed the best punch. That might’ve been enough to take the first round.

Close round. Good exchange in corner. Gave the round to Veazey.

Third round was the best one for Champion. Landed a clean right hand after a nice counter.

I gave Veazey the last round…

MTC Media Scorecard: 39-37 Veazey

Official Scorecard: 40-36, 40-36, 39-37 all in favor of Veazey

Christopher Arnold (4-1, 4 KOs) vs Lamarco Ellis (2-7-1, 1KO) – Arnold TKO (2:02) 1st round

That was a quick one. Ellis had no interest in being in the ring. Was breathing through his mouth after 7o seconds. Arnold gets an easy stoppage.

Max Garland (1-0, 1 KO) vs Mike Fowler (8-44, 3 KOs) – Garland TKO (1:10) 1st round

Garland scores a knockdown in less than 30 seconds. Less than 30 seconds later he scores another knockdown and the ref stops the fight. You can see why Fowler has 44… now 45… losses.

Jay Stancil III (2-0, 1 KO) vs Andre Donovan (1-1, 1 KO) – Stancil III UD

Both fighters came out throwing from their heels with Stancil III getting the better of the action early on but Donovan did catch Stancil III with a clean shot that made him take a couple of steps back.

Early in the second, Stancil III catches Donovan with a clean right, sitting him on the canvas. Give Donovan credit, he’s coming forward and he’s landed some clean punches himself. Stancil III has absorbed a lot of punishment this round despite being the one who scored the knockdown earlier in the round.

We come out for round 3 and Donovan has all the energy. Stancil III looks drained. What a turn of events!

This fight is what an undercard should be. Back and forth… two-way action.

Fight ends how it started. Non-stop action. I have the knockdown in the second round as being the difference in the fight.

MTC Media Scorecard: 38-37 Stancil III

Official Scorecard: 38-37, 39-37, 39-36 Stancil III

Dominique Crowder (12-0, 8 KOs) vs Yeison Vargas (20-9, 15 KOs)

Just like a lot of fights, the first round was a “feeling out” round.

The second round provided a little more excitement as Crowder used his jab to set up his power punches. The last fight was a tough act to follow.

Crowder using the old fashion one-two to control the round and you can tell Vargas is getting frustrated. At times, Vargas is chasing and then winding up.

Crowder controls another round with his movement and his jab. He’s pitching a shutout on my card.

The 7th round was the best round for Vargas and you can argue that he didn’t win the round. Oye.

MTC Media Scorecard: 80-72 Crowder

Official Scorecard: 80-72, 80-72, 80-72 Crowder
