Boxing: Not for you Oscar

When Errol Spence dispatched of Yordenis Ugas, we all knew what was coming next.

If and when will Spence face Terence Crawford.

It’s obvious that both fighters want it to happen as they took to Twitter shoot daggers at each other.

At this point, it’s the only fight that makes sense and it will happen.

A great place in the calendar would be the first weekend in December. It’s around the time that Floyd Mayweather Jr. fought Ricky Hatton. It allows Canelo to have his spots in the calendar without asking fight fans to pay for two big pay-per-views back to back.

The last thing this fight needs is for Oscar Dela Hoya to get involved. Yes… Oscar seems to think he could help Crawford get the fight.

Getting promotion companies to work together has been difficult for generations now. Egos, network contracts, money splits all come into play when two big time fighters try to get in the ring together.

Boxing fans tend to wax poetic about the old days when big fights happen but most of the time, that was at the expense of the two combatants in the ring. Those were exactly great deals for the fighters.

With boxers being more aware of their finances, just taking any deal won’t happen.

Dela Hoya couldn’t protect Canelo Alvarez’ money. He was making side deal after side deal while making promises that he ultimately couldn’t keep.

This cost him the biggest attraction in boxing. Dela Hoya is anything but the solution to getting this fight made.

I get it. Out of all of the big boxing promotion companies, Golden Boy Promotions finds itself on the bottom after being right there with Top Rank and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).

With so much at stake, sorry Oscar… this fight isn’t for you.
