Georgetown Basketball: Ewing Gets Support

Georgetown head coach, Patrick Ewing, received public support from the university today.

The Hoyas are having a historically bad season. They’re 0-17 in Big East play going into tonight’s game at Seton Hall.

In nearly five seasons under Ewing, Georgetown is 68-81.

His tenure has been marred by transfers including losing an entire recruiting class via the transfer portal.

Receiving public support doesn’t mean Ewing’s job is safe. There are a lot of examples where coaches have received, what some would describe as “dreaded” vote of confidence.

It’s always been an awkward situation when a university feels a need to move on from a legend who played there. There were similar situations at Houston (Clyde Drexler) and St. John’s (Chris Mullin).

What makes Ewing a different situation is he paid his dues as an NBA assistant prior to accepting the Georgetown head coaching job. He was hired as a coach and not a figure head to help rally the alumni.

It’s part of the reason why this season has been especially difficult on the university.

If Ewing stays in his current position, he could be working with an entire new staff next season. That could be a condition of keeping the job. There have been coaches on all levels of different sports that will be fired rather than fire their staff. That’s a move that Ewing probably won’t make.

After tonight’s game with Seton Hall, Georgetown’s last regular season game will be at Xavier.
