CAA Final: In Game Blog

Final: UNCW 55  Delaware 59

What an ending. Up 55-54, UNCW had a chance to push it to 3 with 1:17 left but Sims missed what was essentially a layup. Nelson came right down and penetrated and hit Davis for a short jumper giving the Blue Hens a 56-55 lead with 51.7 seconds left.

Sims misses a three and Carr is fouled with 14.5 seconds left. Carr hits one of two BUT Ebby Asamouh gets the offensive rebound and is fouled with 11.1 seconds left. He makes both and Delaware is up four and they seal the deal!

Blue Hens go dancing!

Delaware Timeout (2:18): UNCW 55  Delaware 53

Sims gives UNCW their first lead since 45-44 on a nice fadeaway. Carr has checked back in for the Blue Hens

Under 4 Media Timeout (3:58): UNCW 50  Delaware 53

This game could come down to free throw shooting. The Blue Hens are in the penalty and UNCW have 6 fouls.

Lets see how Delaware holds up with Carr going to the bench with 4.

Under 8 Media Timeout (7:32): UNCW 47 Delaware 49

Anderson’s first basket gave Delaware their first lead since 19-17. After the Seahawks took the lead back on Sims’ two free throws, the Blue Hens got a three point play from Carr (16 and 10 so far). UNCW has no rhythm on offense when the Blue Hens successfully wall off the lane.

Under 12 Media Timeout (11:27): UNCW 41 Delaware 40

UNCW went over five minutes without scoring. Of course, they snapped the scoreless streak by driving the ball in the lane (go figure).

Painter and Anderson are a combined 0-7. Nelson Jr., Carr, and Davis have been carrying the weight on offense. They’ve combined for 34 of their 40 points so far.

Under 16 Media Timeout (15:59): UNCW 39 Delaware 38

Sims comes out and hits a three right out of the locker room. It came off of good inside-out action.

For Delaware, it’s what I said in my keys. Nelson Jr. paint touches. He went downhill in a straight line and got a layup. The Blue Hens have to stay committed to driving the ball hard to the front of the time or throwing it in the paint. First six points of the half all came inside the paint.

Halftime: UNCW 34  Delaware 30

Good first half for both teams even though, you could argue that it seems like UNCW should be up by more. Mike Okauru has 8 for the Seahawks. The Blue Hens are being led by Carr’s 11 points. Kevin Anderson is scoreless in the first half.

Timeout UNCW (19.4 seconds): UNCW 34  Delaware 30

The Seahawks are using their use-it-or-lose-it timeout. (yes… that was a copy and paste job)

Timeout Delaware (44.2 seconds): UNCW 34  Delaware 30

The Blue Hens are using their use-it-or-lose-it timeout.

Under 4 Media Timeout (3:21) UNCW 30  Delaware 24

UNCW continues to shoot it well. They’ve made 6 out of their last 8 including their last three shots. On Jamahri Harvey’s last three, Nelson was right there in good defensive position and still couldn’t stop it from going through the net.

Under 8 Media Timeout (7:01) UNCW 21  Delaware 19

Delaware took its first lead at 19-17 behind some spirited play by Andrew Carr. It included a steal and dunk where he was able to stay in front of Sims.

UNCW almost went three minutes without scoring. Good news on the Seahawks front. They are getting in the lane off the bounce

Under 12 Media Timeout (10:56) UNCW 15  Delaware 13

Nelson Jr. is warming up as the Blue Hens start to settle down. The former GW Colonial made two three pointers. Both teams have 10 rebounds and the lines are identical. Ten total rebounds. Four on the offensive end.

Under 16 Media Timeout (15:56) UNCW 8  Delaware 3

So far so good if you’re a UNCW fan. Before the game I talked about Jaylen Sims having to be the best player tonight. Sims has a quick 5 points on 2-4 shooting.

Delaware started out looking a little nervous on offense. Jacked up some shots. Let it get a little too deep in the shot clock. They did get some penetration from Jameer Nelson Jr. after the first few possessions.
