The NFL can be a very “monkey see, monkey do” league.
The Los Angeles Rams went full blown NBA trading future assets for immediate return. In a league where that supposedly can’t work, the Rams made it work to the tune of the Super Bowl win and you know who was watching.
That’s why Ian Rapoport’s report of the Commanders making a run after Russell Wilson shouldn’t shock anyone.
Ron Rivera doesn’t want a young quarterback. And to be fair, this year’s draft doesn’t provide a potential franchise quarterback. He also doesn’t want to gamble his or the organization’s future on Taylor Heinicke. Smart man.
The NFL’s overreliance on the quarterback position forces teams like Washington to spend the offseason shopping for an impact quarterback. If Wilson isn’t available, where does Washington turn?
There’s little to no chance for a reunion with Kirk Cousins even if Minnesota wants to move on from the former Washington signal caller. The bad blood between organization and player might be slightly behind Marcus Allen’s feeling for Al Davis during his Raiders playing days.
Other options include Marcus Mariota and Mitchell Trubisky. Neither one conjures up hopes of a repeat of the early 1980s.
If Rivera can’t find a quarterback, his time in Washington will be no different than Jay Gruden’s or host of other coaches who has come through Washington under Daniel Snyder’s leadership.
