George Mason’s 67-44 win over American U can be classified as “well a win is a win”.
Devon Cooper would have a team-high 18 points. D’Shawn Schwartz scored 13 of his 15 in the second half.
The Patriots raced out to a 27-8 lead but after that their play was “uneven” to be kind.
Maybe it was their opponent. American was never able to put anything sustainable together but found themselves only down 11 with the ball in the second half. But an Eagles offensive drought allowed Mason to push the lead back up to 17 on a Josh Oduro layup.
Even then Mason couldn’t totally put AU away. After Oduro picked up his fourth foul (he was in foul trouble all night), Elijah Stephens went backdoor and laid the ball up cutting the Patriots lead back down to 11 at 47-36 causing head coach Kim English to call timeout.
After showing a little fight, AU would go on another drought and the Patriots would push the lead to 21 on Cooper’s three pointer.
