Marcus “Mook” Washington live scoring of the Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant undercard.
Anthony Dirrell (34-3-2) def Marcos Hernandez (15-5-2) 4th Round Knockout
Round 1
Dirrell started off the round with a big right and then he settled the pace down. Somewhat inexplicably. Hernandez landed some nice shots before Dirrell had a nice uppercut near the end of the round. Dirrell 10-9
Round 2
Dirrell landed some nice shots but Hernandez came back with a nice left counter causing Dirrell to seek some distance. But Hernandez closed the distance to the point where he was landed some good body shots in the middle of the ring. Hernandez 10-9
Round 3
Hernandez carried the action that round. Dirrell literally stood in the middle of the ring and was as inactive as they come. Hernandez did good work to the body. Hernandez 10-9
Round 4
Dirrell finishes the fight with a vicious uppercut!!! Hernandez couldn’t recover. Dirrell wins with 4th round knockout
Rey Vargas (35-0-0) defeated Leonardo Báez (21-5-0) Unanimous Decision
Official Scorecards: 99-91, 100-90, 100-90
MTC Media Scorecard: 100-90
Round 1
Vargas dominated the round. He set up everything off of the jab. Once he established it, he was able to work to the body. Vargas 10-9
Round 2
Vargas controlled most of the round behind his jab. He’s doubling up the jab and then throwing hooks behind it. Baez did land a combination near the end of the round. Baez needs to either jab his way in or when Vargas stops throwing, he needs to step in and throw. Vargas 10-9
Round 3
Baez starts round 3 a lot more aggressive. Throughout the round, Baez found little spurts to throw combinations. Other than that, Vargas hit continued to hit Baez with power hooks. Baez was cut in the round by accidental head butt. Vargas 10-9
Round 4
Again Baez has a little more success getting inside to land a punch or two but Vargas dominated the round with vicious body work. Vargas 10-9
Round 5
Vargas continues the body attack including tripling up to Baez’ body early in the round. Baez in diving in all off-balance. He looks like a defeated fighter right now. Vargas 10-9
Round 6
Baez has a chin on him. Vargas is hitting him with flush combinations and Baez has took every one of them. Vargas 10-9
Round 7
I have no clue what Vargas is doing. Instead of staying on the outside like he’s done all night, he needlessly exchanged punches with Baez. I get it. Vargas is trying to get a knockout but there’s no reason to be silly. Vargas 10-9
Round 8
Vargas returns back to what made him successful throughout the fight. He led with his jab and dug to Baez’ body with the left hook. Vargas 10-9
Round 9
There has been four clashes of the head between these two. Vargas controlled the round even though Baez was able to get Vargas to the ropes. He didn’t have success keeping Vargas there. Vargas 10-9
Round 10
Vargas finishes the show. He spent the 10th round digging to Baez’ body. Baez was game but he didn’t do enough to even try to win the fight. Spent too much of the night eating punches without returning shots. Vargas has a successful return after a two-year break.
Elvis Rodriguez (12-1-1) defeats Juan Pablo Romero (14-1-0) 5th round knockout
Round 1
Pretty good start to the fight. Both fighters went to the body. I thought Romero was a little more active and landed a couple of combinations. Romero gets the round 10-9.
Round 2
More two way action! Once again, Romero spent the round going to Rodriguez’ body. He even had Rodriguez’ back up against the ropes but when the action is in the middle of the ring. Rodriguez had success. Romero gets the round 10-9.
Round 3
Better round for Rodriguez but Romero had success with his counter punching. Both fighters landed power punches and it could certainly go either way but I give the edge to Rodriguez. 10-9
Round 4
Rodriguez lands several uppercuts that round. He also had success with his hook. It paid off as he got a knockdown with under a minute left in the round. Definitely a 10-8 round for Rodriguez
Round 5
Once again, a lot of two-way action. Both fighters were having a measure of success until Rodriguez landed an straight left to knockout Romero. It was Romero’s first loss of his career.
