Zepeda and Vargas’ scuffle at the weigh-in ended up being more competitive than the fight itself.
Underdog Jose Zepeda (35-2, 27 KOs) destroyed Josue Vargas with a first round knockout on an overhead left.
After the fight Zepada said “I was ready. I was 100 percent ready, and I told him in the press conference there’s levels to this.”
He was 100% right. Vargas (19-2, 9 KOs) simply said “He caught me with a good left hand, and I tried to recover, but I think I got up too fast”
The co-Main Event matched up Jonas Sultan vs Carlos Carallo
It was the fight of the night. Sultan (18-5, 11 KOs) would walk away with a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the fight 94-43 for Sultan. The Making the Cut scorecard had it 95-92 Sultan.
The fight featured 5 knockdowns with Sultan scoring four of them. Caraballo (14-1, 14 KOs) had one knockdown. The third round saw both fighters get knockdown once. But overall it was the knockdowns that proved to be the decisive margin.
Sultan said, “This is boxing. This is war. And I came to win tonight. Caraballo is a tough man, but I wanted this one.”
Besides the third round, Sultan knocked down Caraballo in the 2nd, 6th and 9th rounds.
