Notre Dame Football: Florida State Wrap Up

Final Score: Notre Dame 41 Florida State 38 OT

Highlights:

Coan 26-35 366 yards 4 touchdowns, 1 Interception

Kyle Hamilton had 2 interceptions

Offense:

Positives:

Coan’s ability to make plays in the passing game. At times he looked very poised and out of his nine incompletions, two were drops by Michael Mayer and there was the Hail Mary at the end of regulation.

There were questions about the wide receiver corp coming into the season. Would there be someone on the outside that could make plays? Last night, Kevin Austin is hoping he provided some answers. Austin had 4 receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. He provided Notre Dame with a threat on the outside which helps open up the middle for Mayer.

Joe Wilkins Jr. had one catch but it was a big one. He went up in tight coverage to snag a touchdown. He was face masked and then had a Florida State player cheap shot him on the ground but Wilkins Jr. still held on to the ball. That’s a good sign.

There’s Still Some Questions:

One of the things Ian Book provided was the ability to extend plays. We didn’t see that out of Coan last night. He stayed locked in the pocket and, at times, that didn’t help the offensive line.

Speaking of the offensive line, the Irish had difficulty establishing any type of running game. Kyren Williams averaged 2.3 yards a carry and, as a team, the Irish only managed 1.9 yards a carry. The Irish had only 6 yards rushing in the second half.
