I’ve never hidden the fact that the British Open is my favorite major.
The challenge each location presents along with the elements makes for compelling television.
John Rahm will be a popular pick and why not? Rahm finished 8th in the PGA Championship. He was going to win The Memorial before he had to withdraw and we all remember his winning performance at the US Open. What’s even more impressive is he shot a 68 on Sunday at the PGA and a 67 on Sunday at the US Open.
Brooks Koepka will also be a contender on Sunday. With all the coverage about his feud with Bryson DeChambeau, it’s easy to forget how well he’s played. In his last two tournaments, he finished 4th at the US Open and followed it up with a fifth-place finish at the Travelers. Like Rahm, Koepka’s Sunday scores (69 at US Open and 65 at the Travelers) have been impressive.
There’s a good chance that Royal St. George’s will see a star-studded leaderboard on Sunday. I was tempted to pick Tyrrell Hatton. The course sets up well for him and a Hatton win would fit the blueprint of a champion at The Open. After missing the cut at the US Open, Hatton finished 18th in the Scottish Open.
But in the end, my pick is Louis Oosthuizen. The South African seems poised to win his first major his 2010 win at St. Andrews.
In the three majors this year, Oosthuizen has finished 2nd at both the US Open and PGA Championship and a respectable T26 at The Masters.
