Return of the USFL

On Thursday, the USFL announced that it was back 36 years after it died an avoidable death.

The league plans on operating in the spring of 2022 with eight teams participating.

Fox Sports has a minority stake in the league and will serve as the league’s broadcast partner. “The relaunch of the USFL is a landmark day for football fans and FOX Sports,” said Eric Shanks, CEO and Executive Producer, FOX Sports.

The original USFL started making waves when it signed big time stars out of college football. Herschel Walker, Jim Kelly, Doug Flutie, Reggie White, and Steve Young were some of the big names who started their career in the USFL.

The league started suffering economically and led by Donald Trump, pushed to sue the NFL. Trump’s desire to move the league to the fall so it could compete directly with the NFL might go down as one of the worst business decisions in history. The USFL would win the case but was only awarded $3 in damages.
