Saturday night, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs) returns to the ring to fight Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs).
Alvarez is the overwhelming favorite over the undefeated challenger.
Speaking of the challenger, earlier in the week Saunders requested that the ring be increased to 22 feet. Some saw it as an act of desperation and they would be right. Ring size will not help Saunders because of Canelo’s technical skills.
In fact, Saunders undefeated record is nothing more than promotion material to make the casual boxing fan think they will be a challenge to Canelo.
What to Expect
There’s talk that Canelo will take Saunders into “deep water” where he will fold. That’s not a bad idea on Canelo’s camp. Get in some live rounds against an opponent that Canelo should dominate.
Look for the champ to slow Saunders down with punishing body shots. That will render the size of the ring as a non-story. Once that happens, Canelo’s speed, great footwork and punishing combinations will make it only a matter of time before he puts Saunders away.
