Free throw shooting and turnovers doom Colonials
Earlier this season, George Washington went to Richmond and got blown out. This time around, the Colonials hung tough and had a chance but free throw shooting and turnovers would be their undoing.
Richmond would hang on for a 73-70 win.
George Washington 9-19 from the free throw line. They would turn the ball over 13 times.
The Spiders were led by Blake Francis’ 17 points. Armel Potter would have a team high 17 points and 11 assists for the Colonials.
The first half was tight throughout. George Washington would have the largest lead of either team, six, at 23-17. A Nick Sherod three-pointer with 32 seconds left would give the Spiders a 33-32 lead going into the locker room.
Richmond came out on an 8-0 run to start the second half. Nick Sherod had five of the eight points including a three-pointer. Blake Francis had the other three-pointer for the Spiders.
Richmond’s lead would grow to 12 at 53-41. The Colonials responded with a 14-6 run cutting the lead to four. They would have a chance to cut the lead to two but Chase Paar would miss a dunk, Maceo Jack would grab the rebound but then miss a layup. The Colonials would follow that with Jack missing the front end of a one an one. The Spiders would follow up that sequence with a three-pointer by Francis pushing the lead back to seven.
But George Washington wouldn’t go away. An Armel Potter layup would cut the Richmond lead to 66-64.
With x seconds left and a 73-70 lead, Blake Francis would miss two free throws but George Washington couldn’t take advantage. Potter would get fouled with 4.6 seconds left and he would miss both free throws.
