Davis Performances Left Fans Wanting More
Gervonta Davis scored a 12th round TKO victory over Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-3) for the vacant WBA World Lightweight title. It was Davis’ first fight at 135.
It looked like the fight might end early when Davis put Gamboa down in the second round and again in the eighth but he couldn’t put away the tough Cuban.
Perhaps that wouldn’t have been the case if Davis (23-0) came into the fight in shape. Instead, he came in at 136 pounds before getting down to 134.8 pounds 90 minutes later.
There were times in the fight where Davis work rate was extremely low and he looked lethargic for long stretches. Davis averaged just 28 punches per round. This allowed the 38 year old Gamboa hang around long after he should’ve been gone. “I was catching him and I was hurting him, even though he was alert. I believe my performance was a C-plus,” said Davis. His C-plus assessment is being very kind because it bordered on a D-minus.
According ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Mayweather Promotions is looking to have Davis fight on pay-per-view in 2020 perhaps against junior lightweight champion Leo Santa Cruz.
